The project started with the initiative of 3 women who work as environmental activists whose goal is to reduce food waste in Israel. The purpose of the app is to encourage people to save food that’s in good condition by giving or receiving food for free.
So, what is the problem?
According to the “Food Waste and Rescue in Israel Report of 2021" data, made by the Ministry of Environmental Protection in collaboration with Leket Israel, the scope of food loss per year is 2.6 million tonnes. Not only that but also half of the lost food is edible and can be saved. Currently, no app serves our goal of reducing food waste in Israel.
Since there is no such exact app, I researched how food delivery apps work, which formed the basis for the functionality of some of our application. The apps I researched are "Wolt" and "10bis".
Pros
Time tracker
One of my best experiences as a Wolt user is the real-time tracking of the order status and my delivery status. The tracker lets the user know what is happening in his order process at any given moment in real-time.
Closed restaurants appear in the search
When the users search for food delivery in the apps, the results include closed or non-relevant restaurants.
It is difficult to communicate with the service customer
It takes time to find the contact details in the app if the users want to reach out to customer service care.
Cons
Filtering search options on the map screen
Adding filters, such as distance and food preferences, in addition to the free search bar, allows the user to focus the search and optimize it.
I conducted quantitative research with close-ended questions and some open-ended ones, that pilot group and others completed them.
1. Handing out food is often seen as an act of the needy and the underprivileged.
2. 72% are willing to pick up free product if the transportation is easy for them.
3. This app brings strangers together. A meeting between strangers may cause a feeling of insecurity and lack of privacy among some users.
4. Some people have food allergies.

Information architecture

Loyalty program
Users can accumulate points by using the app, which can be converted into discount vouchers for various stores that will work in cooperation with the app. Receiving the vouchers may encourage the target audience to use the app.
Fresh and colorful UI
The choice of light and colorful design was made to attract a wide audience and overcome the handing out of food stigma.
Rating users
There is a requirement to rate users after interacting with them (after handout/pick-up). Also, the users can filter their search by users rate. This solution may not fully solve the problem, but it still reduces the possible vulnerabilities between users.
Food pick-up distance preferences
There are three places in the app where the user can choose pick-up distance preferences: in the onboarding process, in the search, and while editing personal details. This is meant to allow users to see where food is handed out near them.
Minimum interaction
There is an option to leave the food in a specific location. Also, the chat is limited to specific questions and answers. This prevents casual chatting, which may drift into personal places. Thus, the user's privacy is preserved.
Food preferences and allergies
The users have to indicate whether they have food preferences, and thus they will avoid seeing meals that contain unsuitable ingredients. In addition, when adding a meal, the giver must indicate whether it contains common allergens.

Giver flow - Persona 1

Personal details
Oren Shaked
32 years old
Married from Ramat Gan and a developer in a high-tech company
Characteristics
Loves to cook
Analytical
Friendly

Pain points
Oren likes to cook in his free time, but his wife is also a hard worker, and they are left with a lot of food, mostly after weekends. Thus, in most cases, the food gets thrown in the trash. Throwing the food away causes Oren bad feelings for two main reasons -
1. It pollutes the environment.
2. These are usually edible meals in excellent condition, which can be used by others.

Step 1
Add a meal or a product to hand out
Step 2
Receive a notification when someone is coming to pick up your meal or product
Step 3
The meal was collected, you rate the experience and get one fruit as part of the loyalty program

Picker flow - Persona 2

Personal details
Lior Gedalya
25 years old
Single from Tel Aviv and a behavioral science student
Characteristics
Vegetarian
Environmental activist
Loves to travel

Pain points
Based on her care for the environment and preventing pollution, she makes sure to recycle plastic bottles, glass, cartons, and paper. Also, she works part-time and is a student, which doesn’t leave her much time to cook for herself or money to order food every day.

Step 1
Set up your preferences and choose the perfect meal for you
Step 2
30 minutes tracker gets activated. If needed, you can get in touch with the giver by the chat
Step 3
The meal was collected, you rate the experience and get one fruit as part of the loyalty program

The full user flow

If I had the opportunity, I would measure the impact of my solutions as follows.
Goal
Engagement - Users find the app useful and continue using it on a regular basis.
Metrics
- Check how many users completed the onboarding immediately after downloading the app and how many completed it after a week.
- Define an active user. In this case, a user who completed onboarding and picked up or handed out a meal at least once.
- Check how many users are committed to the app by reusing it and completing a handout or a pick-up process.
- From the users who completed the onboarding, check how many posted a meal to hand over. In addition, check how many of them looked up a meal to pick up.
